I found this spider on the frame of my bedroom door. I live on Long Island, NY in a basement apartment. I was bitten a few months ago i think this guy might be the culprit. Any ideas on what he could be?

  2. Jen says:

    Hey KB,

I think you are absolutely right – I didn’t realize that it was the same spider flipped over. But I defiantly agree with you that it’s a Red Back.

  3. syd says:

we have many spiders where I live and one of my relatives found a brown recluse when he was taking a shower one day and we find numerous daddy long legs and other miscellaneous spider species lingering around and the reason I bring these things up is because just a few days ago a bump appeared on my lower right leg and although I have had a history of cellulitis, some spider bites can cause staphylococcus infections which look similar to cellulitis infections so I am wondering if there are any spider species that cause the growth of streptococcus bacteria that may lead to cellulitis, etc?

  4. KB says:

    Hey Jen,

Thanks. I have to apologize for not mentioning both photos are of the same spider, just flipped over.

Weird thing is that it was dead. I wonder what killed it?

About two weeks prior to the above spider #1239, I had found another one, identical markings and it too was dead.

Chemicals I put around the house have to contact spiders to kill them, I just found that out.

It has to be a Red Back. The markings are so close.

  5. Sierria says:

To #7, that is a harmless orbweaver. to be exact, Neoscona Crucifer.
There is no need to kill this little guy. just sit back and watch them weave their huge, beautiful webs. :)

  6. Scizyr says:

Hello, I have this guy living between the windowpanes in my bedroom. He is about 1.5 inches from tip of back leg to tip of front leg. He doesn’t have access into my bedroom from where he is(even if I open the window) so he isn’t really threatening to me. I was just curious if he is dangerous and what species he is because his fangs are quite big for spiders around central Wisconsin. The odd thing I noticed about his fangs is they get wider near the tip.

  7. Maj G says:

What kind of spider is this? I have seen at least a dozen in my house in the past week. When it is alive and legs fully extended it is 2″ across. The fang looking things are what scare me the most. I found this one dead in a fish tank I was moving.
I live in Oklahoma if that helps at all.

Should I be worried about its bites?

  8. Jen says:

    Hey KB,

It looks to me as if the top one is a Red Back Spider and the bottom one is a Black Widow.

    Hope this helps.

  9. Tonia Burns says:

I found a spider this morning. Its small, round and had about 9 or 10 circular neon yellow spots on its back. It is very distinctive, I went to get my camera, by the time I got back to it, it disappeared. I have been cleaning up its web in the same place for a couple of weeks. When I see it again, I will certainly get a picture. Can you tell me what kind of spider this is? there are children who play outside and I dont want them to get bit

  10. Juboi says:

Also I believe the one in #7 is of the same a furrow orb weaver or likeness of one. Hope this helps!

  11. Juboi says:

john in #8 that looks like a Furrow Orb Weaver spider. i live in VA and i have dozens of these outside.

  12. Jessica says:

I live in North-West Oregon, I found two HUGE scary spiders today outside my house. One was a mostly white (huge) body, white striped red/yellow legs (huge)… It was over an inch long and wide. The next one had a black velvety body (huge) with gray/black striped legs (huge), not quite as large as the first one, but still just about an inch in both directions. I am concerned they may be dangerous. Does anyone recognize them? The pictures don’t do there sizes justice.

  13. kb says:

I found two of these creators on my back porch dead. Need confirmation. After research I believe it to be a Red Back Spider. I live in Texas 50 miles northeast of Dallas. I can’t find research placing this species in Texas, only Australia.

i need some help. I have a serious phobia of spiders-and anything like that of a spider.
so, today, i saw this really creepy spider, and i have searched google all over to identify it-i wanna know what kind it is, and if it’s deadly or something. To my annoyance, I haven’t had any luck at all identifying it.
Okay, it has the sort of body like a widow, only it’s bigger in size. It is light-brownish. The legs are quite long-just like a widow-and they’re light-brown and black-striped. It was fuzzy-looking, but the hairs were short. The abdomen had a design I’ve never seen before-actually, I haven’t seen anything like the spider itself before.-I’m worried it’s a new species and scientists haven’t discovered it yet, or something.

Anyways, the design looked sort of like light brown and gray zebra stripes. And, in the spot where a black widow would have the hour-glass, it had a sort of design kinda like a die(dice), only it was black with four white dots.
My sister spotted it making a very large web outside our window, and-being a arachnophobia. I sprayed it-and the little dot covered in white silk(which i believed might be the egg-sacks)-with spider killer. I took a picture, but somehow my phone lost it.

    So…can you help me…?

OH! and i almost forgot to mention I live in Connecticut-that’s important info, right?

  15. Stephen Schmid says:

Hi I live in the lower hudson valley in NY and do have a small forest behind my house. I was going into my pool the other day when I saw the largest spider I have ever seen around my house. It seamed to be gliding across the top of the water in my pool quite easily and was around 4-5 inches including the legs. It was lightly colored, I cant remember exactly but tan with some yellow, i think. I didnt think spiders this large were native to NY and I am extremely curious as to what it could be, if you have any info please let me know.

Hi, I was wondering what kind of spider this is. We found it in our back yard. We are wondering if we should be worry or not. Please help.

  18. Mark says:

Whatever is pictured on #377, is what I’m interested in. What is the name of this spider and is it dangerous. The one I have is big and ugly. The body is close to 2 inches long and the legs are just as long. Thanks for any help.

  19. MaLissa in Kentucky says:

I’ve found several spiders around my home…in my laundry, my bedroom, my kids room, and today I found about 30+ tiny baby spiders I could barely see on some clothes in my room next to the window…I’m guessing they just hatched because they were so tiny and clear. I’ve searched for a week online and cannot find these spiders anywhere.
I first noticed the problem when I woke up last week with a bite on my leg that bumped up with yellow/brown pus inside and was red all around it about the size of a quarter…it hurt to the touch like a bruise. I’ve got three small children and am terrified they’re going to get bit. We’ve lived in the same apartment for over 4 years and this is the first time I’ve seen these type of spiders.
They start out looking almost like a widow shaped bottom that’s off white with brown markings and light brown legs with dark brown stripes at the bends…then as they mature their bottoms turn all grayish brown and their legs turn redish brown. Their mandibles are very large.

Can you help me id these??

    Thank you for your help,

    MaLissa in Kentucky

my name is Jacob and i found a spider in the woods and i need 2 know what kind it is, it has a light colored forest dirt and black stripe pattern on its legs and body it is perfectly camouflaged when still. when i first caught it it jumped repeatedly so i believe it is a jumping spider but i want specifics.

I live in Wellesley Ontario, Canada. I need help identifying a spider that I found in my kitchen sink. Usually my husband puts them outside or gets rid of them, however he was out when this happened. I’m horribly afraid of spiders due to a bad experience as a child when I was up north in Perry Sound and was bitten by an unknown spider and admitted to the hospital. Therefore it took all my strength just to get this picture without completely freaking out, but I’ve never seen a spider like this before. Please let me know if it is dangerous in any way.

  23. Heather says:

I found this spider in my garage today and was kinda alarmed. We live in Fredericktown OH, and we are having quite a problem with all kinds of spiders lately. We live behind a man made lake, so I figured that it has something to do with that. This guy was quite large and brown and furry. It was probably the size of a silver dollar. Attached is a picture that I took of it. Is it something I should be concerned about? I also found this other spider which has yellowish legs and has a white sack on its back and it has light grey markings on the sack. This one I sprayed with kitchen bug spray to prevent my cat from eating it. It looked very scary. Is this one anything to be concerned about? I’ve attached pictures of both…the yellow legged spider is dead so it curled up a bit.

    Thanks,
    Heather

  25. Katherine says:

I found this spider on my kitchen floor last night. The body isn’t very big (1/2 inch maybe) and the legs are long and thin with some definite hairs (wouldn’t classify it as “hairy” though). It is light brown in color with some stripe like white or lighter color markings on its body. The most noticeable thing I saw were two dark/black sacs (balls, boxer-like) things on its first two legs. They did not appear to have any pincers or fangs attached to them. Just two ball things… They were a lot shorter than the rest of the legs.

Hopefully it is nothing to be alarmed about as it was hanging out in the same area where my dog was.

Thanks for your help in advance!

I found this spider in my pool skimmer. It was a bit stunned from the water and chlorine but still alive. Any idea what kind of spider this could be? I assume it fell from the trees above the pool.

  28. Holly says:

    For number 22,

I actually do not believe that is a brown recluse. I have caught many brown recluse in my home in Michigan, where they are NOT native to, and actually had a spider researcher check to see if they were actually brown recluse. They best way to tell is if it has a “violin” on its back. It looks as if the picture you have take the spider has a straight line, which does not resemble a violin. So it might actually just be an impersonator. But Just to be sure I would have someone look into it. Brown recluse are often non-aggressive, but will cause damage if they bite.

I live in Salem, Oregon and I have the same spiders as #50 but without the blue tips. I’ve been working on my woodpile and have found hundreds of them with the bigger ones easily fitting on a silver dollar. Seems that i have found them burrowed in the ground as well. Just looking for an I.D. on them. thank you.

HELP PLEASE…….I live in Southeast Georgia and have been seeing A LOT of these spiders lately. The larger one was found in front of my house under a wet shirt. My son brought the shirt in the house and when he dropped it the spider ran and I caught it to identify. Just a few seconds later while in a glass it laid a large round egg and is still holding to it. It’s legs are less than 1/2 inch long and it is brown. It sort of resembles a fishing spider-wolf spider…I really have no clue. The second one was found underneath a desk in my dining room with an undefined web and is the smaller of the two. It had a round pea sized body is grayish in color with what looks like a violin shape and little spots on it. Please help me. I have 3 young children and am very afraid. I have also found several black widows around my home. PLEASE help me identify them and what can I do to help lessen them. Thank you so very much for your help!

    Sincerely,
    Maureen Bulnes

this spider is a grand daddy long leg.

the best way, (without burning hairspray) is brake cleaner in a can. the stuff is extremely toxic and will kill it. you could also go with pyrotechnics and spray burning hair spray on it though.

  37. Falan Talbert says:

My husband found a spider in a UPS shipment. It was about the size of a bottle of whiteout. It had a pretty green body with two humps on the back. It has two lightning bolts in black that ran down the body. The legs were green and black and the body also had a brownish orange color around the green. We’re terrified, it jumps and is very aggressive.

  38. Shawna says:

I live just East of Knoxville,TN. This spider (001) has been “hanging” out above my front door for about a week. I knocked down the web one night just to see it doing another one in the same spot the next night! Now as of today 8/12 there is another one (002) on the facade of the house. I have three small children and two dogs. I just want to make sure they are not dangerous.

    Thank you,

No bites, but this spider is outside in our garage door area. Any Ideas on what kind it is? It has been there for days and a nurse friend said a Banana Spider, but the pictures I saw online didn’t look like one. Should we kill it w/ pesticides? Thanks for any input.

there is a spider living on the stoop of my apartment building. it has a large web (over six feet). the spider is brown with black stripes and/or spots. the thorax is tan. i watched it eat another spider after what looked like a fight. its semi-fuzzy looking and has large fangs. i just don’t want my dog to be bitten by a brown recluse… otherwise, its pretty cool.

  44. Misha says:

Hello, I hope someone can help me identify this spider. I live in the Lansing, Michigan area, which is in the southern central part of the lower peninsula. I have never seen this spider before and I have lived in the area for over 20 years. It is approx. 2.25 inches with the legs; the body is about 5/8 of an inch long. It is mostly brown with black markings on its back and the tips of its legs are also black. I found it in my basement in the window curtains. I did not see a web anywhere around. Its general shape reminds me of a hobo spider although the markings on the back are not the same and it is bigger than a hobo spider. Thanks for your help!

Did anyone identify #246? I found one of them crawling REALLY FAST across the garage floor the other night (seriously, really, really fast). It seemed to curl up around my shoe to attack me as I stepped on it! I haven’t been able to find any other descriptions or pictures about what it might be. Please help! I’m located in Boise, Idaho.
