I found a spider but I killed it before I could truly Identify it. I live in Oregon and have seen a lot of spiders but this one got me worried. It was a small one, black with short legs. What was distinctive was a red strip on the back. Almost hour glass shape. I thought black widow for a second but the marking for them is underneth. This one was on its back. Do possible know what this may be.

    Thanks

this was found in my very large basement sink. It was easily 3 inches in diameter. The body had some orange on it. Too scared to get a closer picture. What is this? I live in upstate NY and have no idea how this bad boy got in my basement.

    Thanks,.

i got bit a few days ago and at first it was just a red bump the size of a bead and didn’t hurt at all. but now a few days later their is a red bump the size of a dime surrounded by a large area of light red the size of the opening of an 8 ounce paper cup. the area is very painful to a point of having to limp. the area is also stiff and very sensitive to even the slightest touch. if anyone knows what bit me i will feel a lot better. (maybe)

I think #S 1,22,28,57,72,89,96,and 97 could all be the same type of spider I live in Las Vegas Nevada and have seen plenty of these in my yard, neighborhood, and inside my home I was told by an exterminator that they are wolf spiders, but they also resemble the hobo spider, not the brown recluse, brown recluse have a black violin shaped marking and are also called the fiddle back spiders.

  9. Don Neudecker says:

One of these nearly crawled into my left ear while camping near Idyllwild, CA. I was setting up our tent and this little fella must have found it’s way onto my hat and crawled down the leather strap which ran just next to my ear. I accidentally flipped it off just before it made it into my ear.

sorry i cant get a photo but there’s this spider in my backyard and i have never ever seen it before and i desperately want to know what it is.

it has a web that’s kinda blotchy, not well done bugs can fall through it, its either dark brown, black black red, or black with and orange stripe down its abdomen, and a thick V on the underside.

its web is made between my garage and fence and hides in the underside of the fence when not doing anything. ants crowd around the web a lot too, and is its main food source.

  11. Kim Wilson says:

My husband was bitten twice by a spider…they are large red swollen bumps on his wrists with lttle bite marks in the middle..he says he didn’t feel anything right away..he was in the garage lifting the lawn mower..I’m guessing that spider was underneath it..he saw a large amount of baby spiders all in a web but did not see the female spider..we live in southern Ontario…at first I was afraid it may have been a black widow spider..

we get them here..but then I saw the bites that were posted and they look exactly like the brown recluse spider bites..he is having no reaction or discomfort but the marks are not going away…they are huge. I really do not want to see that spider that bit him..I may never leave the house again. my question is does a black widow spider bite differ from other bites and does everyone react the same to the bite..

  12. Courtney says:

    Hey,

My name is Courtney and I live in Oregon. I nanny for a one year old baby boy and I keep finding these spiders in his room. They are black, have orange and black legs, and have a orange spot on its butt with a faint white line down the middle. I can’t get a good enough picture of the spider, nor can I find one online. I want to know if these spiders are poisoness! From the looks of other peoples comments, It may be a wolf spider? Let me know.

    Thank you! (:

  13. Barbara says:

to those worried about spiders in #’s 1,22,57, 72,97, etc. those are NOT brown recluse spiders!!! I believe they are wolf spiders, though not 100% so still be careful. Brown recluse spiders look like the picture below in the link. You can identify them by the violin shape on the back of their thorax. hope this helps.

  14. Cindy Karges says:

Okay…I think this is the same spider as in picture #62 but with a slightly different abdominal shape and color. I’m sending a picture of it to the referred to email address. This particular spider was in the dirt of my garden in south-west Indiana and not in Oregon so it adapt easily. It was about an inch long from mandible to tip of abdomen. I wasn’t able to capture it before photographing it.

  19. niqui says:

    Hi,

I live in Las Vegas NV and tonight on my porch I found a spider in the corner just off the ground. It was hanging upside down in it’s web and by first glance, it looked like it could be a black widow because of it’s black color and sleek curvy shape. It’s was about the same size as well, and had a rather bulging abdomen just as they do. (I find a lot of those out here in the dessert) How, ever instead of an orangish-red hourglass or dot, it seemed to have three vertical gray dots that were very small, on it’s underbelly. This is the first time i’ve seen one in a few years, and I’ve never seen one on my new side of town yet because I figured they’d all been eaten by the Wind Spiders over here. I would truly appreciate it if you could help me to identify this spider.

    Thank you,
    Niqui

  20. Ida Stickler says:

My son found a spider in his camper in my back yard. It is light brown almost white and a skinny little body. It jumps, and it has a darker brown stripe running the length of it’s body. Don’t know if it is a boy or girl and truly don’t care. Need to know is it poisonous as I have 2 grandchildren living with me. Thanks a million.

  21. Stephanie says:

I don’t have a picture but i live in south central Kentucky just along the tenn border. I was picking up a bottle out of my kitchen floor that fell out of trash when this spider jumped from the bottle or fell off of it on to my arm, of course i freaked and knocked it off in the floor and immediately stepped on it.

I wish I hadn’t killed it right away so i could have identified it better but it was 2.5 to 3 inches in length, cream colored almost white but not exactly, it was probably 1.5 to 2 inches across its back from one front leg to the other, front legs and back legs longest and other legs shorter shaped exactly like grass spiders, think it came in through a window where air conditioner is, there is an old flower bed and small tree just outside the window and is also where we keep the water hose,so it’s shady most of the time and damp too. looked everywhere can’t find a picture on any spider website??

I am dumb founded. I have small children and am worried that there may be more, want to know if they are dangerous.

  22. K Kay says:

I wrote in detail about the BIG black spider last week, the boby 2-3inches, very long legs. Tonight I found another black spider, almost as big as the last one but thicker body, and a little hairy. I live in South west Fl, and it’s the raining season, been here since “88” never seen nothing like these creepy crawlers. HELP!!! ASAP.

  23. Kellie says:

Found many spiders in my house. they are small about the size of a q-tip head. the body and legs are redish orange the abdomin is greyish brown and has a white dashed line, roughly 4 dashes, on its abdomin from the web spinning spot to mid abdomin on top and 2-3 others on each side. No hair that can be seen. The abdomin is roughly 2 16ths of an inch wide and 3-4 16ths of an inch long. The body is roughly 1 16th of an inch long. The legs are about as thick as a mechicnical pencil led the thin type.

  24. Philip Stokes says:

did anyone ever identify the spider is #62 photo? I found one in my garage in western New York state. thanks, Phil

  25. Tara says:

I finally found out what my mystery spider is!!! I would call it a wood spider. (#461 for picture) It might seem strange, but if the spider you’re trying to identify looks similar to mine, if you search “spiders on drugs” on youtube, it will bring up a crazy video, but it definitely helped me figure out what I had!

And, by the way, even though spiders creep me out beyond all belief, this website is super!!!

  26. Ami says:

We live in VA (USA). We have seen quite a few of these big spiders and do not know what they are. Can you identify it for me?

I have the same spider in my house as #62. I killed it. Freaked me out. Has anyone Identified it. I have a little boy and I’ve never seen this spider before. Please help, thanks!

  29. Nik says:

So I squished it before I could get a pic but in my garage today I found a black spider with a red ban running down the TOP of it’s abdomen. I’ve looked all over to figure out if it’s actually a Black Widow or not and can’t find anything similar except for an Austarian Widow. But since I live in KS, I figure that’s not it.

  30. holly says:

My son found this in his bedroom about 20 minutes south of Seattle.
It looks so much creepier in person.
Should I be as freaked out as I am? Not sure how to add the pic I took.

Black furry-looking spider about 10 mm in size with white outlines on its head and legs found our house in eastern Massachusetts. Actually this is the 2nd one we found. Its head has a white shape on it and its body has a white line on either side. This is as close a shot I could take. Thanks for any help.

Hi, I live in Colorado Springs and i just found a spider in one of the refinished rooms in my basement. It is brownish and tan. It is very small and it was just sitting on the wall when i found it. No web or anything. It has these weird markings tho. On its belly it has a dot with what looks like a V under it.( it’s brown but the markings are tan). It has the same design on its underbelly just opposite in color. Does anybody know what this could be? Unfortunetly i dont have a picture because its only like a quarter of and inch in length so its not coming out clear.Thankyou if you can help.

  35. K Kay says:

I found this really huge black spider in my bathroom, scared the crap out of me, at least 2/3 inches lots of legs(didn’t stay to count) took the only thing that was handy, hair spray, and sprayed it alot, it kept on moving, throw it in the toilet that totally woke it up and flushed it down. I live in South West Fl., very tropical especially now its the rainy season. I’m not scared of alot of things, but this one takes the cake. I also seen a very large tan hairy spider, bigger than my hand, it was so fast couldn’t even get close enough to kill it, it saw me coming….What the heck are these (look like killer spiders) invaders in my home, please respond ASAP, thank-you, K

  36. Christy says:

We found an interesting “object” on a tree branch last week. It was a perfect square (about 1cm square) and it had several tiny “holes”. My husband removed it from the tree and we put it in a plastic bag with the intention of showing it to a friend who knows about trees. We forgot all about it and while cleaning out a basket in the kitchen today, I came across the bag. About 10 tiny spiders had “hatched” from the square. They are black with a red tip on their tail-end. 8 legs. They are maybe 2 millimeters long. While we sat there examining them, I noticed another one hatching. It was completely orange in color but was the same size. Any idea what kind of spider this is? I can’t get a good picture, since they are so darn small!

  37. Heather says:

oh, and if it helps, I live in Bowling Green, Kentucky, and its either spring or early summer here and it was a warm day when I found the spider, thanks!!!!

  38. Heather says:

I was helping my dad clean his room so he could switch with my older sister, and I was moving a picture frame that he had left on the ground, and there was a harry, brown-ish red-ish spider under it..I picked a clothes hanger up and put it in front of the spider and it crawled kind of slowly onto it…it stayed on it while I walked outside with it without moving and my dad killed it, it’s body was maybe an inch across and its legs where a little long and kinda thick but not too thick, and it had no markings and I thought it was a brown recluse, but my grandma told me that brown recluse’s had smaller bodies….

  39. Joe says:

I live in Missouri. As much as I did not want to, I had to kill a spider in my apartment. The body was dark black, the head looked like it had a gray beard, and on the top of the abdomen, it had three gray diamonds in a row; starting from the head direction and going to the tail. The body was thick, and when curled up it looked like it would have fit on a nickel, if not a quarter.

Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

i got bit yesterday and im not sure weather or not it is a spider bite or maybe a mosquito. i noticed it late afternoon. It’s about a 1 cm bump on my shoulder, it didnt hurt at all when i first saw it, a few hours later is was extremely sensitive to the touch and i woke up this morning to find it it now purple. does this sound like a harmful spider bite?

  41. Rose says:

    Hi all,

I have a few bits on my calf, I noticed them about 2 days ago. There are 7 bits in total and they are all arranged in pairs about 1 inch from each other except for one which is off to the side of the others. I noticed them because they started itching, but I didnt see anything, all I could feel was a small bump. Yesterday the bumps turned red, and today the bumps are still red, but the surrounding area around each individual bump is red and about 1-2 inches in diameter each. The actual bumps however are about the diameter of a grain of rice. The itching is terrible, I put purell on it, because that was all I had at work with me today, and it helped with the itching. Also the skin feels much warmer then the rest of my skin, but I am not sure if that may be from the itching or the bumps.

About 4 months ago I had the same thing and in the same formation on my stomach, and it went away within about 1-2 weeks and left a small skin discoloration which is practically gone now.

I dont know what type of spider this is, and I dont know if the past bite is connected to the bites i have now…

Thanks for any advice or suggestions you have!

Hi there, I came across your web page (very nice!) in my search to hopefully find someone to identify a hideous spider I found in my house! I live in upstate New York and found my puppy chasing this large, the largest spider I’ve ever seen in person. It was about an inch or more in length and very dark appearing black and surprisingly fast moving! I’m hoping it’s not poisonous. Needless to say I am not a spider person, but now a very scared home owner wondering if this guest has left some babies around!!!

Hoping you can help identify this!

I apologize that my pictures are not that clear, I was shaking and a bit nervous to get too close to it! I zoomed and in lost some quality in the pictures while doing so.

I live in central New York state. I saw a spider crawling through the grass today. It was about an inch long. It looked black and fairly sleek (little or no hair). It had a mark on it’s back that sort of looked like a tan/light brown corncob. I was wondering if it was safe to go back in my yard today!

  45. frank says:

i don’t have a picture sorry, I know a black widow when i see one but the spider i found in a suburb of nashville tenn was shaped like a black widow in my opinion approx the size of a dime legs included shiny finish and red as a beet from stem to stern. didn’t see any markings but i did let it live as i haven’t ever seen one b4. I have seen a lot of spiders, well acquainted with most of the local’s if it wasn’t solid red i’d be inclined to call it a black widow and go on. anyway central Tennessee on my brick wall on the shady side of the house. it didn’t seem timid at all. during day light hours and i found no web. any ideas where i can look at some mug shots?

  46. Scott Kemp says:

I live in San Diego CA about 4 blocks from the beach. I’ve lived here for about 5 months now and I keep finding the same kind of spider all over my house. Always on the walls. Ranging in size from a dime to a little larger then a quarter. They are brown a black but. The Somewhat of a peanut shaped body, with the lower end (the but) being black. I almost want to say its a brown recluse, but all the pictures of brown recluses I’ve looked at seam to have much longer legs. I’m beginning to think their is a matting frenzy going on behind the walls. The house is over 50 years old.

I dont have a picture at the time but could you please give me an idea of what kind of spider this could be?
    Thanks you!
    Scott
